The Grenada School District AmeriCorps Program gladly welcomes Mrs. Phyllis Chism as the new Program Director. Mrs. Chism served for two years (2000-2002) as an AmeriCorps member with the Future Teacher Literacy Program. She used the Segal Education Awards from serving to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Delta State University and then her master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Mississippi. 

She comes to the program with past insight into AmeriCorps and 24 years of teaching experience in the schools. Her experience will be extremely helpful for our AmeriCorps team members as they continue to tutor K-8th grade students. The AmeriCorps tutors have had a positive impact in the Grenada School District for the past 14 years.

Mrs. Chism will be working daily with the administrators and staff at the Grenada Elementary K-5 and the Middle School 6-8 schools. She is very passionate about her profession as a teacher, always seeking ways to help students achieve his or her full potential. Her strong belief in meeting students at their need and providing effective teaching strategies to help them flourish academically is critical. Motivating and leading AmeriCorps members to their full potential as professionals in teaching or other careers will also be her focus.

Mrs. Chism has been married over 39 years to Mr. Stephen B. Chism, Sr. They have three children, Stephen Chism, Jr., Ashley Ruffin (Ravis) and Brittany Chism. They have two handsome grandsons, Carsen and Landon Chism.

Our AmeriCorps Program is excited about Mrs. Chism’s enthusiasm and experience. We are grateful to have her on board and look forward to her leadership for AmeriCorps at the Grenada School District.
